I sometimes find myself in instant empathy with someone. But it's often difficult to sustain that connection as you learn the details over time.
The concept of empathy is problematic in its assumption that what one person feels is the same as another's feeling. What I may interpret as an empathetic response may be, in fact, simply a sympathetic response. In and of itself, this is a neutral response; the complications arise after the initial response, when people's assumptions color their post-event actions.
