SD

used to be short for »Sicherheitsdienst«, the SS secret service. Hundreds of people from Eastern Europe, not just ethnic Germans, were offered and accepted SD positions. They worked, e.g. as interpreters in POW camps and as guards in concentration camps. Many of them were dubbed »displaced persons« (DP's) after World War II and allowed with their families to emigrate to the US, since they were of potential use during the Cold War.
