A terrorist missile attack on a commercial aircraft is among airline bosses' worst nightmares. Industry experts admit that there is little they can do to protect against the threat.
Yesterday's attack came at a difficult time for airlines, which have struggled to win back the confidence of passengers since September 11.
The International Air Transport Association this week warned that the world's airlines were headed for a combined loss of between $5bn (£3.2bn) and $7bn on international routes this year, with Americans in particular still wary of travelling.
