As a little girl, I used to sing the hymn 'He who would valiant be' with great curiosity and quite a lot of trepidation. I knew that eventually I would come to the lines that told me of a mysterious and fearful land (probably at the top of my grandfather's beanstalks) full of monstrous giants – see, »though he with giants fight« – confronted by this even more muscle-bound 'he' (possibly Jack). When Isaac Newton was honored by the Royal Science Academy, he was introduced as having seen further than any other scientist.

In his acceptance remarks, he noted that if indeed he had seen further, 'It is only because I have stood on the shoulders of giants' – his acknowlegement that science is a dynamic, not static, pursuit
