The nominalist position is that names and that which they name have no innate connection – that the universe is itself nameless, and that names only exist as interpreted by sentient observers.
Perhaps the »nameless forest« section of Lewis Carroll's »Through the Looking Glass« serves as a decent demonstration of the nominalist principle.
Modern logicians have largely adopted the nominalist position.
