One of life's little sadnesses is that by the time we realise how profoundly one teacher – perhaps two, if we're lucky – changed our lives, we're too old to call them up and say thanks. They died some years ago.
Was not Christ the teacher to end all teachers? I wish I could have sat in on one or two of his open air courses/summer schools. Think of all the extra notes to the Gospels I could have taken down...And perhaps I might have slipped up to him afterwards to suggest that next time he drops by to teach at their house, he and Mary should help Martha in the kitchen with all the boring but necessary domestic work so that BOTH sisters may sit at his feet after the meal.
Teaching – good teaching, anyway – is a form of entertainment.
